Section 2, Provisions of the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 [S1Y-XXD]

2. Definitions.—In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,— (a) "Gram Sabha" means a body consisting of persons registered in the electoral rolls relating to a village comprised within the area of a Panchayat at the village level; (b) "Panchayat" means an institution of self-government constituted under article 243B of the Constitution for the rural areas; (c) "village" means a village specified by the Governor by public notification to be a village for the purposes of this Act; (d) "Sarpanch" means the chairperson of a Gram Panchayat elected under section 12; (e) "intermediate level" means a level between the village and district levels specified by the Governor by public notification; (f) "notification" means a notification published in the Official Gazette, and the expression "notified" shall be construed accordingly; (g) "prescribed" means prescribed by rules made under this Act.
