Section 2, Slum Areas (Improvement and Clearance) Act, 1956 [S1D-CGN]

2. Definitions.—In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,— (a) "building" includes a house, out-house, stable, latrine, shed, hut, wall and any other structure, whether of masonry, bricks, wood, mud, metal or other material; (b) "Commissioner" means the Municipal Commissioner appointed under section 44; (c) "occupier" includes any person for the time being paying or liable to pay to the owner the rent or any portion of the rent of the land or building in respect of which the word is used; (d) "Corporation" means the Municipal Corporation established under section 3; (e) "street" includes any way, road, lane, square, court, alley, passage or open space, whether a thoroughfare or not, over which the public have a right of way; (f) "rateable value" means the value of any land or building fixed in accordance with the provisions of this Act for the purpose of assessment to property taxes; (g) "notification" means a notification published in the Official Gazette, and the expression "notified" shall be construed accordingly; (h) "prescribed" means prescribed by rules made under this Act.
