2. Definitions.—In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,— (a) "elector" in relation to a constituency, means a person whose name is entered in the electoral roll of that constituency for the time being in force; (b) "candidate" means a person who has been or claims to have been duly nominated as a candidate at any election; (c) "Returning Officer" means the officer appointed under section 21; (d) "political party" means an association or body of individual citizens of India registered with the Election Commission as a political party under section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (43 of 1951); (e) "constituency" means a Parliamentary constituency or an Assembly constituency, as the case may be; (f) "election" means an election to fill a seat or seats in either House of Parliament or in the House or either House of the Legislature of a State; (g) "notification" means a notification published in the Official Gazette, and the expression "notified" shall be construed accordingly; (h) "prescribed" means prescribed by rules made under this Act.
