2. Definitions.—In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,— (a) "motor vehicle" means any mechanically propelled vehicle adapted for use upon roads whether the power of propulsion is transmitted thereto from an external or internal source; (b) "owner" means a person in whose name a motor vehicle stands registered, and where such person is a minor, the guardian of such minor; (c) "permit" means a permit issued by a State or Regional Transport Authority or any prescribed authority authorising the use of a motor vehicle as a transport vehicle; (d) "registering authority" means an authority empowered to register motor vehicles under section 3; (e) "transport vehicle" means a public service vehicle, a goods carriage, an educational institution bus or a private service vehicle; (f) "national highway" means a highway declared as such under section 2 of the National Highways Act, 1956 (48 of 1956); (g) "notification" means a notification published in the Official Gazette, and the expression "notified" shall be construed accordingly; (h) "prescribed" means prescribed by rules made under this Act.
